Hole

　トンネルを通るときに息を止める。誰かに教わったわけでもないのに、子どもの頃によくした遊びだ。暗闇を車のヘッドライトが照らしだす。剥き出しになった岩肌や、コンクリートを吹き付けた壁面はどこか惑星のようで、まるで宇宙を探索しているような気分だった。

　Holeは、日本各地にある使用されなくなったトンネルを撮影したシリーズだ。近代以降に造られたこれらのトンネルは、人々の日々の移動を助ける重要なインフラだった。しかし、新しい道ができ人の往来が無くなると、途端に暗闇が主人公となる。蝙蝠が棲みつき、ゴミが捨てられ、そして心霊スポットとして恐れられる。

　人為的に造られたトンネルが、いつしか自然に還っていく。私たちの記憶のなかに、暗闇の手触りを残して。

　Holding my breath when passing through tunnels. It was a game I often played as a child, though no one ever taught me to do it. The car's headlights illuminated the darkness. The exposed rock faces and sprayed concrete walls looked somehow planetary, making me feel as if I were exploring outer space.

　Hole is a series photographing disused tunnels found throughout Japan. Built in modern times, these tunnels were vital infrastructure, aiding people's daily commutes. But once new roads opened and traffic ceased, darkness suddenly became the protagonist. Bats took up residence, trash was dumped, and they became feared as haunted spots.

Artificially created tunnels gradually return to nature. Leaving behind the tangible feel of darkness in our memories.
